There are mixed thoughts on the subject. Some say that Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf was just looking for attention. Others, including me, think that he was enforcing his beliefs in his religion. Only Abdul-Rauf knows the truth of the reason he refused to stand during the American National Anthem. He stated that the american flag, is a “symbol of tyranny and oppression” and thus his Muslim faith prevents him from paying respect to it. It became a really big deal. He was suspended from the NBA but was reinstated when he agreed to stand and pray during the anthem. Abdul-Rauf was actually a really good raw 2 guard for Denver. I have heard that he is still actually playing in Japan at 41. Its a shame that this Anthem thing is what he is really known for. Maybe to him, the fact that he made a stand is the only important thing. I can respect that.
